ETL approved Rhino products keep drinks cool at the Punch and Judy pub

Greene King brewed its first pint way back in 1788, long before the cost of electricity was a concern. It would be almost another 100 years before public electricity generation began, and only in recent times, as electricity prices have surged, has energy efficiency become a top priority for business leaders. Today, Greene King is leveraging innovative solutions like ETL listed Rhino products to enhance energy efficiency and reduce costs across its extensive estate of pubs, restaurants, and hotels.

As owners of one of the UK's largest estates of pubs, restaurants, and hotels, Greene King manages around 2700 sites, making cost reduction a critical business imperative. Among these is the Punch and Judy, a well-known pub located in London’s Covent Garden.

A typical Greene King pub uses significant amounts of electricity annually, representing a substantial portion of the operating costs driven by the extensive equipment needed for a high-quality hospitality operation. To address this, Greene King has turned to ETL listed solutions to enhance energy efficiency and reduce costs.

The Challenge: Reduce electricity costs, serve drinks at lower temperatures

Greene King aimed to reduce electricity costs while serving drinks at optimal, colder temperatures. The Punch and Judy, experiencing high turnover of drinks during peak times such as lunch and post-work hours, needed a solution that could quickly chill bottled products to meet customer demand. Additionally, the coolers had to achieve these results with lower energy consumption.

The Solution: Rhino Bottle Coolers on the ETL

The bar was previously equipped with an older generation of bottle cooler, produced by a variety of manufacturers from the days when any kind of cooling was an improvement on the old style “cold shelf”. Those older cabinets had given good service, but the time had come for a change.

Greene King selected Rhino based on its advanced cooling systems, high quality components, fast pull down and minimal energy consumption and, in 2022, the Punch and Judy replaced their old bottle coolers with ETL listed Rhino units.

The old double-door bottle coolers that the pub previously used, each consumed 4.71 kWh/24 hours. In comparison, the Rhino coolers, listed on the ETL, consume just 0.81 kWh/24 hours, and represent the best in their class for energy efficiency and performance, resulting in substantial energy savings.

The Result: Savings of £2500 per year

The Punch and Judy operates a total of 8 Rhino bottle coolers. Based on historical data and current performance metrics, the switch to Rhino coolers has resulted in annual savings of £2500, assuming an electricity cost of 25 pence per unit.

Staycold, (the parent company of Rhino), Sales Director Naomi Wynn, commented, “The ETL is a trusted database that buyers can use to help navigate through the maze of competing claims. For Greene King, the savings and enhanced performance of Rhino coolers have made a significant impact across their extensive estate.

“A side benefit of the energy efficient components is that they also last longer too. So, a fan that used to have lifetime hours of about 4 years, now lasts nearly 8. Just think of the savings in service engineer visits over a typical 10-year lifespan of the appliance. That’s probably about £300 saved in service calls, carbon saved by not needing a service car to travel to the site, fewer phone calls and management time spent in arranging the visit etc.”

Rhino products can be found on the Energy Technology List under Staycold’s listing. For more details contact sales@staycold.co.uk or telephone 01244 321320.

Staycold join Heineken on its path to Net Zero

Staycold is proud to join Heineken on its path to Net Zero. We join and commit to the 1.5c business ambition of @sciencetargetsinitative.

Twenty-two years ago we began this journey by being the first bottle cooler manufacturer to use hydrocarbon refrigerant as standard in our back bar coolers and Heineken was the lead customer.

We followed up by being the first display cooler manufacturer to have products accepted on to the UK Energy Technology List and we are still there today. Our back bar coolers are the most energy efficient in Europe, by a wide margin.

We created a sub-brand called “GreenSense” because saving energy means saving money: Financial sense intersects with environmental responsibility. The path to Net Zero is the biggest challenge yet and involves looking at every aspect of our operation as well as our products.

We are beginning by signing up to the “Business Ambition for 1.5°C”. Our sleeves are rolled up and we are getting on with it
